William "Bill" Galo Obituary

William “Bill” E. Galo of Avonmore, Pennsylvania was welcomed into Heaven when he passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2025, while holding his wife’s and son’s hand. He was born in Latrobe, PA on August 11, 1956, to William and Bernice (Morton) Galo.

Bill married the love of his life, Kristen Vaughn, in northern Michigan on November 25, 1995, and together they celebrated 29 love-filled years of marriage before his passing. Bill is fondly remembered by his wife, Kristen, and their son, Tyler; daughter Heather; daughter Rebecca (James) Vallorani; grandchildren Morgan (Nick), Karsyn, Lybertie, Grace, Rylen, Tucker; sister Kerry (Dave) Conrad, nieces Nichole (Eric) Lychalk, Stephanie (Ryan) Salsgiver; great-nephews Wyatt, Carter, Aiden; mother-in-law Michelle Vaughn, sister-in-law Kerri (Loyse) Huffman; the family’s beloved German Shepherd, Caesar, and numerous relatives, friends, and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Richard Vaughn, numerous cherished relatives and dear friends.

Bill was a graduate of Saltsburg High School, the University of Pittsburgh (magna cum laude, Political Science), and Seton Hill University (secondary teaching certification, and Masters in Education: Innovative instruction). He was employed at Akers National Roll for over 40 years. To Bill, being a steelworker meant more than a job – it meant standing with his fellow union members. He was a dedicated advocate, serving the USW in various functions.

Bill’s cancer journey began in 2015 and was marked by his unwavering faith and optimism. He bravely faced his cancer diagnosis and treatments and had the remarkable ability to find joy even in those difficult times. He once said, “I am a person of hope,” and he lived those words each day – facing each challenge with quiet strength and a belief in brighter days ahead. Bill had a lifelong passion for weightlifting and strength training and was a motivator and steady source of encouragement to those he trained. As the defensive coordinator, he proudly coached the Saltsburg Junior High football team, finishing one season with a perfect record, going undefeated while holding every opponent scoreless. He had an unmatched passion for fantasy football and managed countless fantasy football teams, always drafting with strategy, trash-talking with charm, and engaging in spirited trade negotiations. In 1982, he set a world record for the coin-operated video game, Mousetrap – a title he wore with quiet pride and a smile. Bill was a talented artist who found joy through countless home improvement projects, spending time outdoors, being with friends and loved ones, watching Batman movies, completing sudoku puzzles, enjoying a bowl of chocolate ice cream. He was the author of “Messages & Miracles,” a heartfelt book inspired by his courageous battle with cancer, and written to offer comfort and hope to others navigating life’s trials. His favorite song, Daydream Believer, reflected his hopeful outlook on life and enduring optimism, even during the toughest days throughout his treatments. Please remember Bill not only for his bravery, but for the way he held onto hope – a true daydream believer until the very end.

The Galo family would like to thank the compassionate doctors and nurses and hospice staff who cared for Bill with dignity and kindness during his appointments and treatments at Hillman Cancer Center, during his 65-day stay at Shadyside Hospital, and upon his return home. They are also deeply grateful to those who accompanied him to appointments, and for the many cards, prayers, and visits that brought comfort and strength during his brave journey with cancer. A special thank you to Father Mark and to Father Roselo for their prayers, blessings, and spiritual guidance. Their support and kindness meant so much to Bill and his family.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Bill’s love for animals, donations may be made in his memory to Orphans of the Storm PO Box 838 Kittanning, PA 16201, or Four-Footed Friends 220 Beck Road Indiana, PA 15701
