John E. Pomfret Sr., 83, of Avonmore passed away on Friday March 25, 2022 at Indiana Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. John was born on April 30, 1938 to the late John W. and Gertrude (Panfil) Pomfret in Arnold. He attended Salina Bible Church and was a member of the Kiski Valley Classic Bowling League (best score 299); Moonlight Inn Golf League; Ken-Hi class of ’56; retired board member of CTRM (Casino Theater Restoration and Management) and a former member of the Army Reserves. He was married to Mary Olive (Allshouse) Pomfret, the love of his life, for 60 years. John was known widely in the commercial painting industry. He previously worked for Penn Auto Body (New Ken) and Sherwin-Williams (Lower Burrell) before purchasing Kiski News in Vandergrift in 1978 and starting a Benjamin Moore Paint store, Pomfret Paints and Variety. He took great pride in his business where he worked side-by-side with his wife Mary and son Brian. John went to work every day he could including the day before he fell ill. He was passionate about “family time”, gardening, fruit trees or anything you could plant and tend to. He loved golf, bowling and watching his favorite teams (Steelers, Penguins and even the Pirates) on TV. He was proud of his Polish heritage and listened and danced to Polkas with his favorite dance partner, Mary. John was preceded in death by his son John, sister Louise and brothers-in-law John and David. He is survived by his sons, Douglas and wife Colleen, Dallas Pa; Patrick and partner Becky, Avonmore; Brian and wife Danielle, Sarver; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren with the 7th due in Sept; brother George and wife Amelia, Washington, Pa; sister Carol Mrvan, Arnold; brother-in-law Gary Hartzel, brother-in-law Larry Allshouse and his wife Donna; sisters-in-law Anne Allshouse and Fran Nolf and husband Jim; numerous nieces and nephews. Johns final act was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. The family would like to thank the caring team at CORE (Center for Organ Recovery and Education), the ER and ICU staff at IRMC for their support. A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Salina Bible Church, Rt 819, Salina, Pa at 11:00 AM on April 30th. A luncheon will follow.
