Elizabeth Boulware Obituary

Elizabeth (B’Beth or Liz) Irene Robinson Boulware was born in Washington DC on January 25, 1937. She peacefully transitioned into her heavenly home on October 24, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband George Boulware, her parents William Franklin and Mary Magdalene (Coleman) Robinson, her older brothers William & George Robinson and a sister-in-law Gwendolyn Robinson.

Born in Washington, D.C., Elizabeth was a graduate of Dunbar High School, DC Teachers College and Howard University, where she respectively obtained an Early Childhood Teaching Certification and a B.S. in Nursing. She began her nursing career at Freedmen’s Hospital (currently Howard University Hospital) in Washington where she met her future husband, George.

Elizabeth and George relocated to Winston-Salem, NC, where they both worked at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Kate Bitting was the first facility offering comprehensive medical care and professional medical education for African Americans in Winston-Salem and was the third largest hospital for African Americans in the United States. Following Winston Salem, the family relocated to Wilmington, DE where Elizabeth took a position at DuPont.

In 1969, the family settled in western Pennsylvania where Elizabeth worked as a substitute teacher for the Kiski Area and Apollo Ridge School Districts. Occasionally, she worked at the Greensburg Tribune Review where she served as a Cub Reporter covering municipal meetings.

An avid learner, Elizabeth added a B.A. in Psychology to her credentials in between her employment at Westmoreland County Head Start and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU)/ Allegheny Head Start where she taught Health, Safety and Nutrition. A certified Pennsylvania Nurse, Elizabeth was also responsible for maintaining health records for AIU attendees.  At AIU, she was credited with creating child personal safety guidelines for the Penn Hills and Duquesne Head Start
Centers, a partnership with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, a Sickle Cell Testing Program and coordinated participation in Even Start.

Elizabeth loved NFL football. She cheered for the Washington Redskins (currently the Commanders), San Diego Chargers and her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. She was also instrumental in creating a partnership with the American Dairy Association to bring top-named Steelers to Head Start to promote nutrition and good eating habits.

In her spare time, Elizabeth enjoyed photography, golf, skiing, 5K races, and helping others achieve academic success. But her true passion may have been raising and showing Arabian horses. She served as a certified show judge in Pennsylvania and worked in leadership positions with the Pennsylvania Arabian Horse Association and the International Arabian Horse Association, along with other equine programs supported by Pa Department Agriculture.
Elizabeth leaves the following family members to cherish her memory: Barbara (Walter) Huckaby, Robert (Martina) Boulware, Lydia (Carl) Galbreath, George (Nettie) Boulware, Montressa Boulware, Cassandra (Kelvin) Pye, H. Zachary, Miles, William, Christopher, Richard, William, Steven, Eric, Angela (Curtis) Williams and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
