Agnes Annette (Shacikoski) Alsippi, 90, of Avonmore, PA, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at St Andrew’s Village in Indiana PA. Aggie was born in Tinsmill PA, the daughter of the late Anthony Shacikoski and Agnes Petrosky. Eventually, the Shacikoski’s moved to a home on Cambria Ave in Avonmore, where Agnes attended the Avonmore School with her beloved, older sister, Beverly. In the 6th grade, Agnes unknowingly met her husband-to-be, Joe Alsippi, Jr, who had migrated into the Avonmore School system from Hick’s Hill just across the Kiskiminetas River. Joe likes to joke that he chased Ag for years till “she caught me.” Agnes was nearly a straight A student, as well as participated in chorus and cheerleading. However, her claim to fame was basketball where she played guard for four years, then co-captained, lettered and became the Girls Athletic Association president her senior year at the newly formed Bell-Avon School, Salina, PA. Also and with much chagrin, Agnes was selected to be the star in Bell-Avon’s senior play, “Pigtails”, where she even cut her hair to unsuccessfully avoid the part. Agnes graduated from Bell-Avon in1951.
While Agnes didn’t plan on any post high school education, her dad did. Agnes chose nursing at the Allegheny Valley School of Nursing in Tarentum, PA, where she graduated in1954. Agnes stayed on at Allegheny Valley Hospital (AVH) working the very busy medical-surgical unit, Ward 2D. Aggie continued to date Joe up until he was drafted by the Army, but when he returned, she and Joe married Sep 19 1958. Exactly one year later, she and Joe moved into the apartment above the new Alsippi Automotive. There they lived having their daughter, Lisa, then son, David. Agnes continued to work full-time till just after David was born, then became a full-time Mom and the service station bookkeeper. In the late 60s their daughter, Lynette, came along. Needing more room, they moved back into her childhood home on Cambria Ave. Agnes eventually returned to full-time nursing in the early 1980s working once again on 2D at AVH. Agnes finally retired in the mid-1990s.
For those who knew Aggie, her quick wit, contagious laughter and beautiful smile could fill a room and lift any spirit. She was pleasant, thoughtful, caring and would do anything for anyone. Yet, Aggie had no qualms letting folks know when she didn’t approve. Aggie became the extended family and unofficial “town nurse” taking blood pressures, doing home visits and even running a walk-in urgent care in the kitchen. She loved her kids, tutored them, stayed physically fit with them, hauled them everywhere and screamed her lungs out in the stands for them. She could finish any kind of wood till it looked and felt like satin. She loved cutting grass and any physically difficult yard work, as well as cleaning and painting. Aggie loved her three grandkids babysitting those local and going to as many activities as she could. She also loved dogs, all of ours, but especially her Diva. And Aggie loved her church, sending cards, going for car rides, especially in the fall, and eating breakfast out. She was just a woman who loved life and it loved her back.
Agnes is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph E Alsippi, her daughter Lisa Randall of New Derry PA and Lisa’s son, Collin of St Louis, MO; her son, David and wife Debbie (Henry) and their two children Christina and Joseph D Alsippi of Indiana, PA; and her daughter, Lynette and husband, Ron, of Florence SC.
