Sylvester Johnston Carney 94 of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Apollo, passed away Friday October 6, 2017 in West Lake, Ohio. He was born April 1, 1923 in Armstrong County, Pa. the son of the late Earl S. and Bertha Mae Barrickman Carney. Sylvester was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the European Theatre during WWII. He was a life member of the VFW, and the American Legion, a member of both the Slovak Club in East Vandergrift, and North Vandergrift (Parks Twp.). He was a drywall finisher by trade and worked many years in the construction industry. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling, train rides, socializing with friends, and especially attending his Army reunions. He is survived by four children; Richard Carney and his wife Mary of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Terry Carney of Elyria, Ohio, Sylvia Hejl and her husband Joe of Mantua, Ohio, and Gloria Carney (Rick Donnelly) of Cleveland, Ohio, seven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and his sister Dolores Carney of Chicago, Illinois. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Helen I. Blystone Carney, and a brother Kenneth Carney. Family will receive friends on Tuesday October 10, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in the Kelly L. Corridoni Funeral Home Ltd. 1916 Moore Ave North Apollo, Pa. Services will be held Wednesday October 11, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the funeral home with Pastor Lee Rupert officiating. Interment will be held in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo.
