Karen Kay (Mitchell) Wilson

Karen Kay Wilson, 58, of Export, passed away Sunday Oct. 22, 2017, at her home. She was born Dec. 30, 1958, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late James Rex and Doris King Mitchell. She was a graduate of IUP with a B.S. and M.A. in music education and served as a music teacher at Burrell School District for 34 years. Before Karen retired, she had a distinctive record of accomplishments. She was a member of PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association), past president and member of WCMEA (Westmoreland County Music Educators Association), recipient of the PSEA Creative Teacher's Award, sang the National Anthem for home Penguins, Steelers and Pirates games, and hosted and attended honors choir festivals including county, district, regional, All State and All East Honors Choirs concerts.  Many local residents will remember entertaining performances by her show choirs. Karen also performed with her own combo as well as others at wedding receptions, jazz concerts and other social musical events. She loved to read, cook, bake and boat on the Allegheny River. Karen is survived by her husband, Richard Eugene Wilson; three sisters, Kathy Stewart and her husband Stephen, of Columbiana, Ohio, Kerry Stroup and her husband Ron, of Oil City, and Kelly Mitchell Flockerzi and her husband Dale, of Oil City; a brother, Tom Mitchell and his wife Mary Jo, of Mechanicsburg; 15 nieces and nephews; and 22 great-nieces and -nephews. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at KELLY L. CORRIDONI FUNERAL HOME LTD., 1916 Moore Ave., North Apollo. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, in the funeral home. The Rev. Ron Wakeman will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. In lieu of flowers, family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Karen's memory to the Oil City Boat Club, P.O. Box 218, Oil City, PA 16301; or Sewickley Township Public Library, 201 Highland Ave., Herminie, PA 15637.
