John F. "Spike" Wegley, 87, of Avonmore, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at ARK Manor, in Delmont. He was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Jeannette, (Penn), the son of the late Frank H. and Rose Anna McCafferty Wegley. Before his retirement, he was employed by Reynolds Manufacturing as a welder for more than 30 years. Spike was a Navy veteran, having served his country during World War II. He was a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Avonmore, the VFW Post 7901, also in Avonmore, and The American Legion Post 57, in Saltsburg. He also was very active with the Avonmore Lifesavers Ambulance Service. Spike loved his trips to the casino and playing cards. He will always be remembered for his volunteer work and his desire to help others. He is survived by two children, John F. Wegley Jr., of Natrona Heights, and Rose Mary Wegley-King, of Avonmore; five grandchildren, Joshua Waugaman and his wife, Heather, of North Carolina, Kristen Minnick, of Apollo, Justin Wegley and his wife, Allison, of Cheswick, Jared Wegley and his wife, Sarah, of Pittsburgh, and Elissa Wegley, of Florida; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Ava, Ellie and Levi; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. Livengood Wegley, in 1995; a sister, Rosella Walker; and a brother, Leo Wegley. Private graveside services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016, in Westview Cemetery, Avonmore. Father Salvatore Lamendola officiated. Arrangements were entrusted to the KELLY L. CORRIDONI FUNERAL HOME LTD., 400 Indiana Ave., Avonmore. Family suggests memorial contributions be made in Spikes memory to the St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, PO Box 617, Avonmore, PA 15618.
